10 Most Downloaded Wordpress Plugins of All Time

Wordpress Plugins make blogging easier for all of us who have chosen Wordpress as our CMS or content management system. Especially for people who are not good at coding, it would be impossible to add the features or interface that we want for our Wordpress-powered site both front-end and back-end without these plugins. That is why Wordpress plugins have become a big part of the Wordpress community. I, myself, have used many of the Wordpress plugins out there.

This post lists the most popular Wordpress plugins based on the number of people who have downloaded a certain plugin. If you will observe, the Wordpress site lists these plugins based on the ratings that the users have given to these plugins and not based on the number of people who actually downloaded them. We feel that the downloads statistics is a better indicator on how popular a plugin is because, for one, not everybody and only a small percentage of people usually rate what they download.

    Though Sociable is the most downloaded plugin in its niche, but I prefer SexyBookmarks – http://sexybookmarks.net. It has a better admin interface and a better output.

    For close-to-technically-clueless bloggers like me, this is a great article. I’ve done a fair bit of web surfing and am pleased to see that I’ve already happened upon a number of plug-ins listed. Whew!

    One suggestion for a future article you may want to consider is the distinction between plug-ins and widgets. I still don’t really understand them but I have figured out that some of the plug-ins I’ve installed and activated then turn up on my Widgets page. ??? I don’t question it, I just say a little prayer of thanks to the gods of blog templates when it works. But I know several other beginning bloggers who are struggling with understanding this quirk too.

    But back to the point of this posting …well done. Big, big thanks.

    While contact form 7 is pretty good, I agree with Marketing Pilgrim.com in that bestcontactform.com has the best contact form service and plugin for Wordpress.

    @contact form -
    Thanks for the enlightening comments, guys! As I have mentioned in the article, this post is not about the best plugins there are but just a roundup of the “most downloaded” plugins. Obviously, the newer plugins with more improved features have lower download stats compared to the old ones. That is why older plugins are also coming up with updates to compete with the new plugins. Thanks to them…

    @Gwen McCauley -
    Hi Gwen, thanks for the comments. There are plugins that can be used as widgets and there are also plugins that are intended for back-end purposes. You just have spend some time going through the documentation or installation instructions available in the plugin page. They are quite easy to follow and are not too technical. It helped me a lot when I was starting this blog. Yes, I will try to come up with another article focusing on the most useful plugins there are in the universe.

  17. Garrett WilliamsNo Gravatar on August 17th, 2009 at 6:46 am

    I didn’t know there was a plugin that automatically submits posts to social networking sites! That could come in handy! StumbleUpon traffic doesn’t stick, but it at least drives up ad revenue.

  18. Garrett WilliamsNo Gravatar on August 17th, 2009 at 7:12 am

    Okay, upon checking out Sociable, then re-reading your description, I must have mis-read the wording. I guess it just adds links on your posts for others to submit them, which I already have. Nevermind, then.
